Conservative British Prime Minister Theresa May’s election pledge to reduce net migration to Britain below 100,000 is just as delusional as her overall attitude towards Brexit, especially given that migration numbers reached record levels well above 100,000 over the past seven years of Conservative government. The lie she is peddling to voters is that once Britain leaves the EU (which will end the free movement of EU nationals to and from Britain within the EU’s border), getting migration numbers below 100,000 per year will be possible.
But Britain’s EU membership has nothing to do with non-EU migration levels which soared to record levels under the Conservatives. In fact, May was Home Secretary — i.e. in charge of immigration — when this surge occurred.
The fact of the matter is that Brexit has nothing to do with non-EU migration levels and it is non-EU migration that constitutes the bulk of overall migration. The notion that Brexit would allow Britain to ‘take back control’ of its borders and immigration levels from unaccountable globalist EU bureaucrats in Brussels is a lie — just like Donald Trump’s pledge that Mexico would pay for a big, beautiful, tremendous, stupendous, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious wall on the U.S.-Mexico border was a lie.
But May’s lies about immigration serve a political purpose: it allows her and the Conservatives to swallow up the hard right/Alt-Right UKIP vote.
The only reason May and the Conservatives can copy and paste broken promises from their 2010 manifesto without paying a political price is because of the staggering incompetence of their opposition led by Jeremy Corbyn as head of the Labour Party. Labour keeps rolling out popular policies but makes no headway in polls because the public has no interest in letting a failed opposition govern the country.
