Tulsi Gabbard Voted with the GOP to Abolish ‘Obamacare Death Panels’ after Taking $10,000 from Kaiser Permanente
Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard voted with the House GOP for H.R. 849 — the Protecting Seniors Access to Medicare Act — which would abolish the Affordable Health Care Act’s (ACA) Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB). IPAB is better known as “death panels” thanks to Republican scaremongering about ‘Obamacare.’ The board’s purpose is to recommend Medicare savings whenever the yearly growth in Medicare spending exceeds a target of 3%. IPAB’s recommendations would become law unless Congress intervenes and passes alternative measures.
To date, no IPAB members have been nominated by either the Obama or Trump administrations and the panel has never been needed since the growth of Medicare spending has slowed considerably since the ACA’s passage.
But that hasn’t stopped lobbyists working for the health care-industrial complex from trying to kill IPAB since IPAB decisions could damage their bottom lines. Fortunately for them, Kaiser Permanente personnel are Tulsi Gabbard’s top contributor by far in the 2017–2018 election cycle. Not hard to see why she voted their way on H.R. 849.
